Lord Havelock Vetinari, also known as the Patrician is the almost benevolent ruler of Ankh-Morpork. The Patrician is something of an unknown quantity. People believe such that at some stage he must have been an Assassin and quite good at it.

People would also be forgiven for think that Vetinari is as mad as some of his predecessors, ruling Ankh-Morpork will do that to you but this is not the case. Vetinari's mind is like a steel trap which is cleaned, polished and oiled every day and is in perfect working order.

"I can't remember the guy's name, but I've always pictured the Patrician as looking like the father in Beetlejuice -- the man also played the Emperor of Austria in Amadeus. And maybe slightly like the head bad guy in Die Hard."

The actors Terry is thinking of are Jeffrey Jones and Alan Rickman, respectively.
